KLH welcomes Priyanka to the team!

Tell us a bit about your background?

I come from a modest background in India, growing up in an environment that made me appreciate that all resources are limited and that relationships matter. I studied and practised architecture in India. In my architectural career I have led the design and on-site completion of climatically responsive architectural projects; some of which have been recognised with awards and have been published in local and international journals.

While working as an architect in India, I developed an aspiration to work towards a sustainable built environment, that eventually brought me to London to achieve a masters degree in Environmental Design and Engineering from UCL. Since then, I have been working on projects to deliver sustainable, low carbon built environments at various scales.

I have also had the opportunity to work with a charity in London on low cost sustainable buildings in impoverished environments, offering me a deeper understanding of the relationship between sustainability, disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.

Where did you first hear about KLH Sustainability?

I first heard about KLH from a very like-minded colleague and friend, who was very appreciative of Kirsten’s sincerity towards sustainability. I dug a bit deeper to understand the values of the practice and contribution to projects; and realised that I would like to be a part of this team. Coincidentally, there was an opening at KLH around the same time and it was this serendipitous moment that finds me part of the KLH team today.

What made KLH Sustainability stand out for you to work for?

The main reason that KLH stands out for me is the honest commitment of its team to sustainability. I am excited about the opportunity this gives me to make a meaningful contribution to some very interesting projects, working within a small team.

Having worked in different disciplines, I strongly believe that collaboration between all stakeholders is the key to achieving sustainability and it is obvious that this belief is shared by KLH.

What is your current role at KLH Sustainability?

I am going to be joining KLH as a senior sustainability advisor, initially to work on the East Wick and Sweetwater Development. Phase 1 of the project will start on site in the New Year whilst Phase 2 is going through the detailed planning process. Phase 3, well, hopefully I will get to see that right the way through design to construction!

I am also tasked with developing KLH’s new offer around technical energy services, which is a huge challenge, but one that I am excited to take on!

How do you see yourself going forward within KLH Sustainability?

I see myself working with a great team that shares my enthusiasm and commitment to sustainability. While I will bring in new technical skills and experience that I have acquired over the years, I also believe that there is a lot for me to learn from the team here and I am committed to my own professional development. I am certain that working together, we can enhance the existing services at KLH; and help clients and projects to develop and achieve holistic sustainability goals.

What does sustainability mean to you?

Sustainability cannot have a rigid definition because it varies with context. Nonetheless, we need to achieve a dynamic balance between natural, human and economic systems- considering the whole system. This cannot be a one-time treatment or an extra layer. It needs to become integral to our thinking and our lifestyle; in a way that it creates more possibilities rather than limiting our options.
