London 2012 Beach Volleyball

Arena Group

KLH Sustainability supported Arena Group in the installation of a 15,000-seater beach volleyball arena, three warm-up pitches and all ancillary services at Horse Guards Parade and St James’s Park. We worked closely with the team through design, procurement, installation and demobilisation. The project was considered a sustainability exemplar among the temporary venues installed for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

An innovative approach to the beach volleyball field of play resulted in a 135-tonne reduction in the carbon footprint of the Games, elimination of 160 HGV movements from London’s roads and an estimated saving in excess of £84,000. In addition, investment in a new parabolic seating system offered significant spectator and sustainability benefits. The full analysis is available for download from the Case Studies page.
